DHA Health Benefits

Willowgrove Hill® pork is nutritionally enriched with DHA Omega-3 and Selenium through a patented nutritional enrichment in the animal’s diet.

CFIA approved Health ClaimDHA, an omega-3 fatty acid, supports the normal physical development of the brain, eyes and nerves.

There are the two main types of omega-3 fatty acids:

• Long-chain omega-3 fatty acids are EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid). These are plentiful in fish and shellfish as well, some algae species provides only DHA.
• Short-chain omega-3 fatty acids are ALA (alpha-linolenic acid). These are found in plants, such as flaxseed. Though beneficial, ALA omega-3 fatty acids have less potent health benefits than EPA and DHA. You’d have to eat a lot to gain the same benefits as you do from fish.

DHA is the omega-3 fatty acid that is widely recognized as the essential fatty acid in the brain responsible for normal functioning of neural tissue (including cognitive performance, learning ability, memory, etc.) and in the retina of the eye for visual acuity. Almost all the omega-3 fatty acid found in brain tissue, where it is required for structure-function relationships, is in the form of DHA.

DHA & EPA can now be found in a variety of foods besides fish due to processed food enrichment strategies (physically adding encapsulated fish oil or some algae to processed food) or by nutritionally enriching fresh meat, milk and eggs through the feeding of DHA rich feed to the animal.

DHA Supplementation has been linked to improvement in:

• Cardiovascular health
• Cognitive Function
• Delaying the onset of Dementia
• Alzheimer’s
• Depression
• Behavioural Disorders (such as ADHD and hyperactivity)
• Chronic inflammatory conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, certain skin disorders, gastrointestinal disorders (Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Crohn’s disease)

Selenium Health Benefits

CFIA approved Health ClaimSelenium is a dietary antioxidant involved in the formation of a protein that defends against oxidative stress and helps protect against oxidative stress.

Selenium is a mineral found in the soil. Selenium naturally appears in water and some foods. While people only need a very small amount, selenium plays a key role in the metabolism.

As a constituent of selenoproteins, selenium has structural and enzymic roles, in the latter context being best-known as an antioxidant and catalyst for the production of active thyroid hormone. Selenium is needed for the proper functioning of the immune system, and appears to be a key nutrient in counteracting the development of virulence and inhibiting HIV progression to AIDS. It is required for sperm motility and may reduce the risk of miscarriage.

For further scientific information on Selenium please visit the Micronutrient Information Center at the Linus Pauling Institute, Oregon State University.

Canadian Verifiable Claims

for Willowgrove Hill

Raised Without Antibiotics

To display this claim, the animal or fish must not have received antibiotics from birth to harvest. In addition, no antibiotics can be administered to the mother of the animal in question in any manner, which would result in antibiotic residue in the animal.

Raised Without Growth Promotants

To display this claim, the animal or fish must not have any hormone implants (only applies to beef in Canada) nor receive any beta agonists from birth to harvest. Beta-agonists* can be administered through swine, beef cattle and turkey feeds in Canada by way of CFIA registered Ractopamine® based products under the trade names Paylean®, Optiflexx®, Engain® and Actogain®.

*Beta-agonists are a class of non-hormonal compounds fed to cattle. Their mode of action is to bind to receptors on fat cells in the animals’ body and redirect and reduce the metabolism of fat. Consequently, less fat is produced and less fat is stored in the carcass. At the same time the compounds bind to receptors on muscle cells and redirect and increase the size of muscle fibers. Muscle fiber size replaces some of the weight normally found from fat and the total carcass contains a higher percentage lean muscle. These actions reduce the energy supplied by the feed to produce weight gain. With more weight produced by the same level of feed intake feed efficiency is increased.

Contains Nutritionally Enriched DHA Omega-3

Food labels that quantify DHA content are allowed to state the following Health Claim:

DHA, an omega-3 fatty acid, supports the normal physical development of the brain, eyes and nerves.

DHA omega-3 fatty acids are primarily found in ocean fish and some algae. DHA can now be found in a variety of foods besides fish due to processed food enrichment strategies (physically adding encapsulated fish oil or specific algae species to processed food) or by nutritionally enriching fresh meat, milk and eggs through the feeding of DHA rich feed to the animal.

If a quantitative statement is made about DHA on a food label, the quantitative statement may appear as a separate statement but the full disclosure of the monounsaturated, omega-3 and omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid content must appear in the Nutrition Facts table.

Excellent Source of Selenium

This food provides more than 25% of the Recommended Daily Intake of Selenium (ie. 12.5 mcg/day)per serving.

Selenium is a dietary antioxidant involved in the formation of a protein that defends against oxidative stress.

The Path to the WGH Verified Label Claim

After seeing the success of Omega in eggs and milk products – and recognizing the corresponding health benefits – Paul and Rosie Hill set their sights on becoming the first pork producers in North America to enrich their products with DHA/EPA Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids and organic Selenium, farm-raised and without the use of antibiotics or growth promotants.

Protocol Development

Willowgrove Hill® has worked with Grand Valley Fortifiers to develop protocols for producing nutritionally enriched DHA Omega-3 pork using North American patented technologies.

Producer Recruitment

Needing more DHA/Omega-3 enriched pork than Paul and Rose Hill’s farm could produce, True Foods™ works with Willowgrove Hill® to determine producers that would be a good fit for the program.

On Farm Audits

All farms that produce DHA/Omega-3 pork for Willowgrove Hill® are audited twice per year (one internal audit and one external audit) to ensure the animals are healthy and well cared for along with consistent adherence to the program protocols.
External Audit – 2014
Food Safety Certificate – 2015

Processor

Willowgrove Hill® hogs are processed at Conestoga Meat Packers following strict segregation and handling policies. Conestoga Meat Packers is externally audited to these standards.

Further Processing

Any further processing facilities working with Willowgrove Hill® pork must also adhere to strict segregation protocols if they want to display the Willowgrove Hill® health benefits on the label. Currently Willowgrove Hill® is working with Finest Sausage and Meat to provide further processed pork products.

Retailer

True Foods™ and Willowgrove Hill® educate retailers on nutritionally enriched DHA/Omega-3 pork that is raised without the use of antibiotics, added hormones or growth promotants.

Consumer

Consumers can be confident that they are enjoying healthy and flavourful nutritionally enriched pork that has been verified by True Foods™.

Verified Willowgrove Hill Farms

Founder: Paul & Rosie Hill, Mitchell ON

Paul Hill has been raising pigs all of his life on the home property where he grew up in Mitchell, Ontario. Rosie was raised on a farm as well, and holds a diploma in Foodservice Management. When they were married, Rosie came to work for Paul in the expanding farming operation, and the rest is Willowgrove history.

Paul and Rosie had three children – Ryan, Maddie and Joey. Sadly, in 2001, their oldest, Ryan, succumbed to liver cancer at the age of two. This loss was the impetus to further enhance their premium-quality pork and ensure that their family – and all of their customers – had an accessible, healthy choice.
